Alghero ist einer der charakteristischsten und beliebtesten Touristenorte im Norden Sardiniens und auch wegen der zahlreichen katalanischen Einflüsse in der Küche, im Dialekt und in der Architektur bekannt.

Eine der bedeutsamen Attraktionen des Städtchens ist die besondere Altstadt,, die sich vom Hafen bis zur Strandpromenade Dante erstreckt. Ein Labyrinth an gepflasterten Gassen (mit katalanisch und italienisch geschriebenen Namen) umgeben von auf das Meer abfallender mächtiger Bastionen, innerhalb deren sich spanische gotische Palazzi mit typischen Restaurants und Handwerksläden, in denen Korallen und Edelsteine verarbeitet werden, sowie Bars und Nachtlokalen abwechseln.

Alghero bietet sowohl Familien als auch jungen Leuten zahlreiche Freizeit- und Unterhaltungsmöglichkeiten und ist dank des nahen Flughafens Fertilia sowohl mit dem Flugzeug als auch von ganz Sardinien mit dem Auto einfach zu erreichen. Sein Touristenhafen, einer der größten Sardiniens, lockt Eigentümer von kleinen und großen Wasserfahrzeugen an, die von hier die herrliche Küste Riviera del Corallo und den Park Porto Conte erkunden können. Vom Hafen fahren täglich Boote zu der berühmten Grotte di Nettuno (Neptungrotte), einem nicht zu versäumenden Naturschauspiel.

Alghero ist zudem berühmt für die Korallenverarbeitung. Die in diesen Meeresgründen gefundenen Korallen mit ihrer lebendigen rotorangen Farbe sind nämlich ausgesprochen kostbar. Sie werden von erfahrenen Händen in verschiedene Formen verarbeitet, eine Tradition, die von Generationen überliefert wird.


Ebenfalls nicht zu versäumen die hiesige Essens- und Weinkultur. Die berühmte Languste, zählt zu den besten der Welt. Sie wird oft auf katalanische Art mit frischen Tomaten und Zwiebeln zubereitet. Ebenfalls nicht zu versäumen sind der allmorgendlich im Hafen eintreffende frische Fisch, die verschiedenen Versionen an Paella und die köstliche Crema Catalana als Dessert. Natürlich zu einem der ausgezeichneten Weine der verschiedenen Winzerbetriebe im Alghero-Gebiet serviert.
